Trauma (PTSD)

What is PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)?

Some people develop PTSD after experiencing traumatic events: for example, a car accident, sexual assault, severe injury, verbal assault, threats, or childhood neglect.

PTSD symptoms can include:

  • Intrusive memories

    • having distressing memories, nightmares, or flashbacks; zoning out; having strong emotional and physical reactions when reminded of the trauma.

  • Avoidance

    • avoiding certain memories, thoughts, feelings, people, places, or activities.

  • Changes to your mood and thinking

    • difficulty remembering parts of the trauma; feeling emotionally numb; having negative beliefs about yourself or others; difficulty experiencing positive emotions; feeling horror, anger, guilt or shame.

  • Changes to emotional and physical reactions

    • self-destructive behaviour; becoming easily startled or scared; feeling irritable; difficulty sleeping, concentrating or remembering.
